Searching for Local Microbrews in Charleston
Annual trips traveling down to Kiawah, I usually like to get a flavor for some of the microbrews native to the Charleston area. I am a big fan of micro brews within my home turf of Chicago, so vacationing in the low country encourages my search for a tasty local pint. Two brews I have sampled in my travels to Charleston include Palmetto Lager and sampling a few varieties at the Southend Brewery. Palmetto Brewing sells numerous ales and pilsners at most restaurants and grocery stores. There trademark palm tree logo beer can be spotted all over the state whether shopping in the beer aisle at a Publix or sitting down for a meal at most lowcountry restaurants.
Southend sells their brews only within its brewpub/restaurant location at 161 E. Bay Street in downtown Charleston. This brewpub is conveniently located in historic part of the city with a partial view of Charleston Harbour and includes a pretty decent menu to accompany the various beers. This brewery stop on Bay Street is a comforting oasis after having to endure a warm afternoon of browsing antique shops with the wife. The last visit we made to Southend included talk from our waiter about the upstairs being haunted by the ghost of a cotton trader. (I believe this location may be a stop included in of the ghost tours promoted in Charleston). So without much further ado, I put together a list of Charleston’s brewpubs and microbrews offered courtesy of Charleston’s finest brewmasters.
